Ideally, your office space will be separated from the main traffic areas of your home. If you have a separate guest bedroom that can double as an office, this is the most ideal option. Avoid the temptation to set up a home office in your own bedroom unless there are truly no other options. Regardless of whether or not you have a lot of phone or are only on your laptop, for concentration purposes it’s critical that a distance be maintained from young children. They must know you are not available during work hours. Lounging on the couch with your laptop is not an office setup nor will it be the most productive choice. Secure a large table or desk sufficient to accommodate your laptop, printer and any other peripherals and necessary documents. The second most important component of a home office is a very comfortable, quality desk chair.  You’ll be spending hours each day in this chair and it’s very important that it provide adequate support for your back and overall posture. If possible, position your desk or table in front of a window to enjoy as much natural light as possible. Add a desk lamp and office supplies as needed.

Finally, commit to a consistent work schedule. Plan to begin working and end working at roughly the same time each morning and evening. This is critical in order to maintain a strong work life balance. Resist the temptation to return to the office in the evenings or on weekends unless your work load truly demands it.
